President Duterte has invoked Filipino revolutionary Andres Bonifacio in appealing to the nation to unite against corruption, criminality and illegal drugs in time for the father of Katipunan’s 154th birth anniversary.
In his Bonifacio Day message, the President said Filipinos should take inspiration from the founder of Katipunan in helping build the nation.
“It was Andres Bonifacio who ignited the fires of revolt that led to the foundation of our nation and brought freedom to our people,” Duterte said.
“As the heirs of his revolution, it is our solemn obligation to bring life to his aspirations and usher in an era of civic consciousness and nationalism,” the President added.
Duterte said, like Bonifacio, Filipinos should “become actively involved in nation-building” at a time “when the future of the country is at stake.” “Let us fight to free ourselves from the grasp of corruption, criminality and illegal drugs; to liberate our people from the clutches of terror and violence; and to preserve our ideals, values and way of life,” Duterte said.
The Duterte administration is facing the challenge brought about by its self-declared war on drugs, which include a fight against criminality and corruption. Aside from this, it had to face a tough stand from the Daesh-inspired Maute Group in Marawi City, Lanao del Sur, which saw a five-month war between government troops and terrorists.
“As we strive to give a peaceful, orderly and comfortable life for all, may we never lose sight of our shared vision for a better and progressive Philippines. Like Bonifacio, let us light the flames of change that will bring about real and meaningful transformation in our nation,” Duterte said.
