AMONG thousands of applicants who tried for the Czech Republic’s Government Scholarship in the past year, aspiring young Filipino individuals have been successfully accepted to study in two of the most premier universities in the European country, with tuition, living costs, as well as necessary medical expenses covered.
This September Filipinos Myka Mae Duran, Rush Salonga and Jean Ramon Yap will begin their academic journey as future engineers and scientists at the Technical University of Liberec, a top-level institution focusing on cutting-edge research in science, such as engineering, nanotechnologies and interdisciplinary collaboration, as well as Charles University in Prague, one of the oldest and largest universities in Europe founded in 1348, excellently known as the first-ever university established in Central Europe ranking in the upper 1.5 percent of the world’s best universities.
The students received the scholarships directly from Czech Ambassador to the Philippines Jaroslav Olsa Jr., who congratulated and challenged them to be the hope and future of the Philippines in their respective specializations.
The ambassador expressed his hopes that “the current boom in academic interest among young Filipinos in the Czech Republic English-language studies, especially in modern-technologies engineering, information technology and, as well as the different ‘green sciences’, will positively continue”.
“Apart from overseeing various Czech-Philippine university programs throughout the Philippines for over four years, it is great to see a huge leap of academic interests from young and brilliant Filipinos who want to continue their studies in the Czech Republic,” Deputy Head of Mission Jan Vytopil stated.
The rapid rise of Filipino students wanting to study in the Czech Republic—either via privately paid studies, on scholarships or via Erasmus-funded programs—is a welcome development among Czech diplomats in Manila. The interest in bilateral contracts between Czech and Philippine universities has changed since 2013.
Not only does the Czech Republic have one of the best educational systems in Europe; it also provides a great quality-price ratio of education and low cost of living.
Furthermore, the Czech Republic has a privileged location in the heart of Europe, which makes it very accessible to neighboring countries, like Austria, Germany, Poland and Slovakia on the borders, and so far as Switzerland, Hungary and Italy.
The country is also Europe’s most industrialized nation, with massive car, aviation, defense and medicine industries with many collaborations with universities and a lot to offer to young Filipinos.
With a centralized location in Europe and its visa-free travel inside the Schengen Area, the Czech Republic can also boast of its cultural richness and diversity, having been a country that crosses many cultures of different origins, like historic marks of Slavic, Germanic and Jewish communities that shaped the creation of Central European lifestyle.
Beside the government scholarships, the Embassy has noticed interest among Filipinos in the following offer to study in Prague for only P10,000 in tuition.
The Czech University of Life Sciences is one of the best local universities focused on tropical agriculture and sciences related to nature, as well as wildlife management.
Now, it has also started to offer an exceptionally low tuition to Filipino students for their Faculty of Tropical Agriculture in English language.
The Master’s degree tuition per year is offered for only 5,000 CZK (approximately P10,000) for which one can study international development and agricultural economics, sustainable rural development in tropics and subtropics, tropical-crop management and ecology, tropical forestry and agroforestry, as well as wildlife management in tropics and subtropics.
The school year starts in October 2017. The date of the second round of admission exams is from August 28 to 30, and can be done over the Internet. Flight expenses are to be covered by the students themselves.
Living and eating in the campus could further decrease living costs, which are already quite low in Czech Republic.
