The season of giving and feasting freely hands out excess pounds and extra inches around our waistlines. Even the most disciplined among us will sometimes have their knees buckle and occasionally give in to a night of overindulgence.
As calories will be in excess, perhaps we can consider giving Christmas presents which, in one way or the other, will promote healthy and active lifestyles. So here are five gift suggestions to give the active—or soon to be active—people in your life.
Fitness-club memberships or day passes
Depending on how much we are willing to spend, we can opt for a daily, weekly, monthly or yearly gym membership for our special someone. This is a good way to nudge someone to living a healthier, more active lifestyle. It shows that you truly care about their health and want them to stay healthy and live a longer and better quality of life. Of course, be prepared for that possibility when the girlfriend asks: “Why, do you think I’m fat?”
Food supplements
Depending on the fitness goal, there are a variety of supplements to give out. If the recipient is the type who wants to put on muscle, protein bars or perhaps a tub of whey protein is a good idea. If losing weight is the priority, thermogenic fat burners such as Hydroxycut, are a possible go-to gift. Apart from giving a burst of energy to power through that work out, it also promotes fat loss. A bottle of multivitamins that will deliver the vitamin and nutrient essentials needed by the body to perform at optimal levels is also a safe bet.
Gym apparel
From trainers to gym shorts, shirts, socks and other gym and sports accessories, there is a wide range of gym wear to suit your budget. Go all out with a pair of Under Armour cross training shoes. Or if funds are running a bit low, maybe those no-show running socks or wrist bands will do.
Spa treatments
A fullybodymassage by a properly trained therapist will do wonders for body and calm one’s weary soul. A massage treatment, whether full-body or for a body part in need of the soothing properties of human touch (think scalp massage or foot reflexology)—after a long, stressful week or a tough gym workout—is something most will embrace with open arms.
Yoga/gym mat
In all its simplicity, a yoga or gym mat is a most useful implement where amazing transformations can take place. The benefits of yoga, from flexibility and strength to a more enlightened outlook in life, are well documented. The non-yoga practitioner, on the other hand, can crunch away and do those abdominal exercises from the comfort of home. It need not be a fancy Manduka mat that can set you back as much as P15,000 a pop. Cheaper, generic options at sports stores are also available.
For sure, we admire Santa for his overflowing generosity and cheerful demeanor. However, the robust belly is something we need not emulate nor encourage. May we give, as well as receive, all things healthy that our hearts desire this Christmas!
