TWO thousand nineteen was a year of awakening and realization for the Philippine Golf Industry. After decades of building golf courses that followed the American model with hybridized turf grasses to give the golfer the ultimate playing experience, reality bit hard.
Golf isn’t the easiest sport to break into. When I took up the game 26 years ago in February, it was like joining a secret society. Instruction was crude by today’s standards. It was exceedingly difficult to find a decent teaching pro without a referral and after a few failed attempts at lessons with some anonymous range pros, I gave up. I relied on my own devices, accumulating instruction books and whatever instruction material I could to school myself in the game.
Every action you take in practice should be leading to change for the better, whether you see better shots in the practice session or not. Long-term improvement is not about how one day (or practice session) goes—it’s more about the little things that are being learned during each session, which adds up into big improvement over time.

Ask your average Pinoygolfer what driver is at the top of his mind and you’ll get the usual answers; Callaway, TaylorMade, Honma/Beres, Titleist, PXG or Cobra. I’ll wager precious few of you think about Cleveland Golf when it comes to choosing a new driver. That would be a mistake, because not only does Cleveland Golf build a very, very good driver in their new Launcher HB Turbo, but it comes at a price well below that of its competition.

By now we’ve all heard and seen the first videos and reviews of the new 2020 drivers on the Internet. As usual, they’re all promising us, the consumers, the same thing—more speed, more distance. But is this actually possible?
I’m a regular on the Internet golf forums and just the other day, I happened across an article on the Half Set on Golfwrx.com. It struck a chord with me as one of my favorite matches of my golf year occurs every January at Tagaytay Midlands Golf Club when the Xavier School Ryder Cup tournament comes around. For several years, I represented my team, the Tigers, in a 6-club singles match which was one of several formats we played in the series.

Here’s something I hear all the time: “I’m playing great in practice rounds, sometimes shooting under par, but in tournaments I can’t find anywhere near the same game and often shoot in the 80s, why is this?”
The history of Baguio Country Club is inextricably linked to the history of the City of Baguio itself. When William Howard Taft was tasked with governing the Philippine Islands, he directed his friend William Cameron Forbes to look for a cool place in the Sierra Madre Mountains of which he had heard rumors. Taft was a large man who found the heat and humidity of the tropics too much for his corpulence. He longed for the cool temperate climes of the Northeastern United States and was determined to find such a place on the Islands.
