LAST year’s Manila International Auto Show (MIAS) proved to be spectacular as more than 100,000 visitors crowded into the World Trade Center (WTC) Manila in Pasay City to view up close around 512 cars, trucks, and classic and vintage cars, as well as motorbike displays put up by the exhibitors and their staff.
MIAS 2105, which runs from April 9 to 12 at the WTC complex in Pasay City, promises to exceed all expectations as it takes car shows to a new level by exploring the ability of automobiles to thrill and excite car enthusiasts of all ages.
This year’s MIAS will cover a total exhibition area of 30,000 square meters in and around the WTC, Philippine Trade Training Center, as well as Annex Tents A and B, including a stunt area, outdoor activity area and test-drive area.
According to MIAS 2015 organizer, Worldbex, around 560 vehicles—10 percent more than last year—will grace the floor of the exhibit areas. Here are some of the stars of the show:
Mazda2. Mazda, represented by Berjaya Auto Philippines Inc., will showcase its award-winning Mazda2, a subcompact hatchback which features a high-quality, sporty interior and excellent driving performance. The Mazda2 is fitted with Skyactiv fuel-efficiency technology mated to a high-compression gasoline engine, as well as the Kodo-Soul of Motion design theme.
Ford Mustang. Ford’s iconic muscle car has taken on a new incarnation with updated design cues such as three-bar taillights and galloping horse badges. Despite the modern touches, the Mustang maintains the unmistakable stance and profile that have endeared it to generations of fans.
Subaru Outback. A luxurious Subaru? Think of a rough-and-tumble go-anywhere vehicle festooned with luxury features and that’s what the Outback is. A 3.6-liter flat six mated to a CVT for better fuel economy and electronic off-road mode full-time all-wheel drive system is its source of motive force.
Mini Countryman. Some people refer to the Mini as diminutive. In the case of the Mini Countryman, the description hardly applies. More than being a hatchback, the vehicle is, in reality, a crossover vehicle with bigger space for occupants and cargo.
BMW X4. Asian Carmakers Corp. takes pride in showing off the BMW X4, which is a four-door sport-utility vehicle (SUV) with the styling of a sport coupe that packs BMW’s latest technology, including a choice of twin-turbo gasoline and diesel engines, eight-speed transmissions and the adaptive four-wheel drive system.
Volkswagen Golf GTI. VW’s recently launched Golf GTI leads the German manufacturer’s showcase. Purists will surely take interest in its turbocharged gasoline engine, which is endowed with plenty of torque that makes overtaking and acceleration a cinch. With an electronic differential thrown in, this set of wheels is a veritable pocket rocket.
Foton 4×4 Thunder Ironman. Foton of China appeals to off-roaders with its 4×4 Thunder Ironman, which features a raised suspension, all-terrain tires, 225 mm of ground clearance, Black Rhino alloys, 2.8-liter Cummins diesel engine and full-featured interior.
Chevrolet Trailblazer. Chevrolet’s SUV offers three rows of seats, a 500-Nm diesel engine with a choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmissions, multilink rear suspension and electronic four-wheel drive system attached to a ladder chassis.
Tata Xenon. Looking for a workhorse? The Tata Xenon will most likely fit the bill with its 1,430 mm x 1,410 mm load bed that is able to carry 260 kilograms and capable of towing 1,800 kg for the 4×2 variant, or 2,200 kg for the 4×4 model.
Mitsubishi Strada. Mitsubishi’s next-generation Strada pickup now boasts of an all-new exterior and interior, and a 2.5-liter diesel with variable geometry turbo.
Kia Sportage. The new Sportage recently entered the Philippine market with a bang as the vehicle can be purchased with either a 2.4-liter gasoline or 2.0-liter turbo-diesel engine. The all-wheel drive system and decent ground clearance makes it an excellent SUV that can be driven on any surface and driving condition.
BYD Qin. STAR Corp. unveils the Qin—a plug-in hybrid sports saloon developed by China’s BYD Auto. Capable of traveling 70 kilometers on all-electric power, the Qin also has a hybrid electric power train that gives it a range comparable to that of a conventional gasoline-powered vehicle.
