MANY local restaurants are chill about the expanded coverage rules on the Service Charge law, as they mostly have regular employees, not contractuals. However, a few of them may also stop collecting service charge (SC) and instead give their employees a share of the restaurant sales, like a commission.

THE Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) remains open to recommendations from the hospitality industry on Republic Act 11360, the Service Charge Law, even as it stressed that said levy should not be used as an incentive to retain competent employees.
A LARGE number of hospitality establishments are opposed to the new rules issued by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), which now require hotels, restaurants and similar establishments to distribute service charges (SC) they’ve collected to even casual or contractual employees, non-regular and agency workers.

PRIOR to the pandemic, I was an inveterate moviegoer. I would gleefully wait for the latest films, especially those which received good reviews, the epic franchises, and those offering quiet, thoughtful (or thought-provoking) moments.

So there’s been a lot of drama in the romance department among Filipino celebrities in the past few months, highlighted by the apparently earth-shattering breakup of Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla. This was quickly followed by news of other separations, among them Kim Chiu and Xian Lim, Sarah Lahbati and Richard Gutierrez, and the latest being Bea Alonzo and Dominic Roque. (The latter, I am told, were even supposed to get married this year after having announced their engagement in 2023. Ooof!)

IT was a night of stars, in the financial community that is, as they attended the Annual Bankers’ Reception tendered by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) on Friday, January 26, at the Fort San Antonio Abad. It was an especially meaningful night as it commemorated the 75th year of the institution, which has overseen the many changes in the country’s history and dealt with the impact of global economic policies. YOU know you’re old when you don’t even know today’s pop stars and matinee idols. So, yeah, I admit I couldn’t relate when the #KathNielBreakup trended on social media. Sure, I’ve heard of them separately (to those in the same dinosaur generation as myself, that’s Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla), but have never watched their movies, accidentally or otherwise.
