The sight of a jeepney is something that shocks every first-time visitor to this country.
“Give me 10,000 Filipino soldiers and I will conquer the world.” These are the famous words of General Douglas MacArthur, who was so astonished by the resilience and strength of the Filipino guerrilla forces against the Japanese during World War II.
Filipinos are everywhere. In almost every country that I have been to, I have always met a Filipino. I have never been to Antarctica, but I am sure that if I did go there I would meet a Filipino.
I would dare to say the Philippines have the highest number of smiles per square kilometer in the world. I could challenge any foreigner to walk down any street in the Philippines and count the number of smiles he or she sees on the faces of the people they meet.
‘Filipinos are probably the most giving people on the planet,” these are the words of world-renowned Chef Anthony Bourdain, after he recorded episodes of his television show in the Philippines.
During the question and answer portion in one my talks recently, I was asked: “Sir, what is the one thing you would change about the Filipino?”
I feel so blessed that my work as a speaker allows me to travel all across Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao, where I get to engage with so many amazing audiences from all sectors of Filipino society.
IRISH moms are like Filipina moms. They worry about their sons a lot. It is now 10 years since I became an OIW (overseas Irish worker), and my Mom’s dream is for me to come back to Ireland. That’s normal right? One of my dreams for my Mom is to bring her here to the Philippines. Not to see El Nido, Boracay or the other popular tourist destinations. But I want her to see what I see every day—the potential of the Filipino people.
THERE are so many similarities between my native country Ireland and the Philippines. Both of our nations were colonized, both of us are predominantly Roman Catholic, and both of us have a history of mass emigration.
