CONVERGE beat Phoenix Super LPG, 132-127, as the FiberXers kept their streak alive while snapping the Fuel Masters’ run in the Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Import Quincy Miller starred with 46 points on 8 of 13 shooting from the three-point zone and also had 18 rebounds, five assists, two steals and three for the FiberXers.
Jeron Teng finished with 25 points and nine rebounds and playmaker RK Ilagan racked up a career-high 22 points with six triples to power Converge’s sixth straight win for a 7-2 win-loss record that put the FiberXers in second place behind Magnolia.
Known for their defense, the FiberXers and the Fuel Masters focused on offense that resulted to the high scores.
Converge coach Aldin Ayo both teams played their transition offense well.
“It’s high scoring because lots of possessions and there were many transition threes,” Ayo said.” In terms of our defense, we prepared short and we’re affected by their schemes and flare.”
Maverick Ahanmisi chipped in 13 points while Aljun Melecio produced nine points for the FiberXers, who nailed 22 triples that matched the league’s fourth all-time in a game and the first for a rookie ball club.
The FiberXers established a 119-107 cushion early in the payoff period of the game that saw 21 lead changes.
Phoenix came to within 127-131 on Serrano’s layup with 51 ticks left but couldn’t go further and saw its five-game winning streak snapped to drop to 5-4.
Import Kaleb Avery Wesson delivered 25 points, 21 rebounds, seven assists and four steals, while Sean Anthony, Serrano and Javi Mocon added 17 points each to lead Phoenix.
Returning Jason Perkins added 14 points while RJ Jazul and Tyler Tio had 12 points apiece.
