JERWIN “PRETTY BOY” ANCAJAS is on the final swing of his training as he engages Fernando Daniel Martinez of Argentina in a rematch for the International Boxing Federation (IBF) super flyweight crown on October 8 at the Dignity Sports Park in Carson City, California.
“Jerwin [Ancajas] arrived last Saturday for the final push of his preparation to regain his world title,” International matchmaker Sean Gibbons said. “He has been in great condition since his last fight.”
Ancajas, 30, had to shed two pounds just two days before his title defense against the 31-year-old Rio 2016 Olympian Martinez, who eventually snatched the Filipino’s belt via unanimous decision last February in Las Vegas.
“His weight is in check, and he has never been on a real diet for a long time so I think everything will be in position that is supposed to be in place,” said Gibbons, who thanked experts at the Philippine Sports Commission who helped tune Ancajas back to fighting condition.
“There will be no excuse if we lose, but it ain’t going to happen,” Gibbons said.
Ancajas’s trainer and manager Joven Jimenez said his ward has been sparring with compatriot Jonas Sultan and Daniel Lim at training camp.
“There’s no need for a foreign guy for sparring. All Jerwin needs is to make the weight comfortably,” Gibbons said. “And we already fixed that [weight] 100 percent.”
Ancajas has a 33-2-2 win-loss-draw record with 22 knockouts while Martinez is undefeated in 14 fights with eight knockouts
