YENG GUIAO is back at Rain or Shine, the colorful yet temperamental coach confirmed to BusinessMirror on Monday.
It’s a homecoming for Guiao as he signed a three-year-contract with the Elasto Painters management.
Guiao, 63, ended a six-year coaching duty at NLEX saying “he would go to a place where he can still coach because he’s not considering retiring yet” from what he does best.
“We will go to a place where we’re needed and happy. I’m very thankful to sir Raymond Yu and Terry Que for bringing me back again,” Guiao said. “I’m in familiar territory and very comfortable and welcome.”
Guiao started his coaching career in 1990 for Swift then Red Bull that lasted from 2000 to 2009. He coached the disbanded Air21 Express from 2009 to 2011 before transferring to Rain or Shine in 2011 and stayed there until 2016.
Guiao will be reunited with the remnants of the 2016 team he left behind—big man Beau Belga, Gabe Norwood and Jewel Ponferada.
Erstwhile Rain or Shine head Coach Chris Gavina will remain as part of Guiao’s coaching staff for the next conference where the team will parade 6-foot-10 Nigerian Daniel Ochefu as import.
“I haven’t seen him play yet. I still have to see him play in practice this Thursday.” said Guiao as he vowed to make the team a championship contender. “We have to be patient and little by little we will.”
