SAMAHANG Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) President Al Panlilio has set his goals high for the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) World Cup next year—form the best national team and leave an indelible impressive mark as main host.
“The SBP is steadfast in its commitment in hosting the biggest basketball event in 2023,” Panlilio told a press conference for the “One Year To Go” countdown for the Fiba 2023 World Cup that will also be co-hosted by Japan and Indonesia from August 25 to September 10 next year.
“With one year to go, Filipinos can look forward to the series of celebrations, events and games that the SBP has set to ensure that the World Cup 2023 will be the highlight of a sports year that people will long remember,” he told the press conference at the TV5 studios in Mandaluyong City.
Joining Panlilio in the event were SBP vice president Ricky Vargas and executive director Sonny Barrios and FIBA Executive Director for the World Cup David Croker.
Panlilio also stressed on the formation of a best-ever national team and announced the formation of a field of naturalized players besides National Basketball Association (NBA) standout Jordan Clarkson and Ateneo’s Ange Kouame.
“We seek the help of the government, Congress, Senate and the President [Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.] on the naturalized players,” Panlilio said. “In most countries, it’s easy to naturalize players.”
A total of 32 countries from four confederations will compete in the World Cup.
The SBP introduced on Thursday the FIBA Local Ambassadors led by Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray and the members of the fabled 2013-2014 Gilas Pilipinas team—Gary David, LA Tenorio, Larry Fonacier and Jeff Chan.
The federation also announced the Tissot Countdown Clock Launch, a drone and fireworks display and an exciting line-up of special guests on Saturday at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall.
