The Department of Education (DepEd) on Thursday reported that an estimated amount of P2.188 billion is needed for the repair and reconstruction of totally and partially damaged schools and classrooms by the magnitude 7 earthquake that hit northern Luzon and tremor was felt in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.
DepEd said that as of August 3, the number of affected schools reached to 646 with 427 damaged schools.
There were 621 classrooms that were totally damaged while 1,271 were partially damaged.
Twenty-one schools are also being used as evacuation centers.
Meanwhile, DepEd spokesperson Atty. Michael Poa said that aside from creating temporary learning spaces, made of light materials, they are also coordinating with barangay officials if they can use basketball courts as temporary classrooms in quake -hit areas.
Other damaged infrastructures include toilets (491) and handwashing facilities (198).
