The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said that the country would experience more intense tropical cyclones, including the category 5 levels, if climate change continues to worsen.
In the past decade, the country has witnessed an increase in the number and severity of weather-related catastrophes, resulting in multiple casualties as well as unprecedented property and economic losses.
In a 10-year analysis by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN-OCHA) covering the periods 2006 to 2016, it was found that 65 percent of the 99 tropical cyclones that entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) made landfall; and that about 10 of those were particularly deadly and destructive in terms of casualties and cost of damages.
Despite the country’s limitations in institutionalizing adaptation and mitigating measures, Filipinos can prepare for the risks associated with weather-related catastrophes. By understanding the risks and preparing for the worst, the damage can be minimized.
First, check the house’s roof for leaks or other damage. The roof is one of the most important parts of your home. Repair any holes, cracks, and leaks immediately to ensure that they can hold throughout heavy rains and winds.
In addition, regularly inspect electrical wirings, devices, and appliances for any damage. Replace faulty wires, sockets, and switches as these could cause severe damage and even death.
Check the windows and doors. Make sure that they can be opened and closed properly, and that there are no tiny gaps where water could penetrate.
Likewise, do not forget to examine the drainage areas near the house to unclog blockages and prevent flooding which could also be a risk for your home.
Also consider getting a home and property insurance policy. This can protect your property from a variety of risks, thus preparing financially for the cost of repairs or replacements to your home.
