Two Filipino teenagers — a Marawi siege survivor and a two-time medalist — won bronze medals in the prestigious 63rd International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held in Norway, The Philippine Embassy in Oslo said.
The winners are: Mohammad Nur Casib from Philippine Science High School- Central Mindanao Campus and Raphael Dylan Dalida from
Philippine Science High School i- Main Campus.Casib was a Marawi siege survivor. He was a student in Marawi City when terror group Maute attacked the city. He and his family fled to Cagayan de Oro City in 2017.This is the third time Dalida brought home a medal from IMO. He won silver in 2021, and bronze in 2020.
IMO is one of the most difficult and most prestigious mathematics competitions for high school students worldwide. It is considered the “world championship of high school mathematics competition.”
More than 100 countries with up to six members in each team participated in this year’s Olympiad.
Four other members of the Philippine team were also feted honorable mentions:
- Sarji Elijah Bona from De La Salle University – Senior High School
- Enrico Rolando Martinez from PhiSci- Main Campus
- Rickson Caleb Tan from MGC New Life Christian Academy
- Filbert Ephraim Wu from Victory Christian International School
Philippine Ambassador to Norway Enrico Fos warmly welcomed the Philippine team to the Chancery and congratulated them.
“Their feat in this Math Olympiad is worthy of emulation by the other kids of their generation in the Philippines. After all, this is a math competition of the best and brightest high school math wizards worldwide,” Fos said.
The Philippine team was headed by Dr. Christian Paul Chan Shio from Ateneo de Manila University on behalf of the Mathematical Society of the Philippines.
Dr. Chan Shio was joined by Hazel Joy Shi as deputy leader from UP Diliman and Russelle Guadalupe as trainer from UP Diliman).
Chiba, Japan will host the 64th IMO next year. The Philippines first joined the IMO in 1988.
