The Philippine men’s squad bowed to Lebanon, 80-95, at the start of its campaign in the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Asia Cup at the Istora Stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia.
SJ Belangel led Gilas Pilipinas with 17 points while Carl Tamayo had 15 points, six rebounds, three assists and three blocks, and Bobby Ray Parks Jr. added 15 points also.
Gilas took a 27-22 lead after first quarter. But the Filipinos couldn’t sustain their momentum as the Lebanese responded with 24-12 run to seize the advantage at the half, 39-46.
The lack of defense was a terrifying problem for the Filipinos as they allowed the Lebanese to stretch the gap to 67-51 with still 3:46 left in the third period behind Sergio El Darwich fade away jumper.
Lebanon didn’t look back from thereon.
Thirdy Ravena fell hard on the floor late in the first half but returned in the game to tally 10 points.
It was the first setback of Gilas in Group D together with India, Lebanon and New Zealand.
Wael Arakji and Gyokchyan posted 20 and 19 points, respectively, for Lebanon.
Gilas will meet India next on Friday at 4 p.m.
