Ten Knots Phils, Inc., a subsidiary of Ayala Land, Inc. (ALI) has completed the first phase of the solar power project to supply renewable energy to Lio Estate, a sustainable township development in El Nido, Palawan. This project is in line with ALI’s commitment to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
In March 2022, solar panels with a total capacity of about 536 kWp were installed on the rooftops of the existing resorts – Seda Lio, Huni Lio, Balai Adlao, Hotel Covo, and Isla Amara.
Energy produced from the solar panels is integrated to Lio Estate’s main powerhouse and redistributed to the operating resorts, shops, and facilities. This has reduced Lio Estate’s reliance on non-renewable energy sources and brought down energy costs. The resorts now enjoy power generated from the sun contributing to as much as 80% of its day time power requirements.
A consortium consisting of Urbasolar Philippines
Corporation and Transnational Uyeno Solar Two Corporation supplied the solar panels and installed the system. DHybrid Power Systems supplied the energy management system.
“As builders of sustainable communities, we want to help in addressing the need for energy security especially for remote tourist hubs like El Nido in Palawan.” said Javier D. Hernandez, Ayala Land Hotels and Resorts President & CEO. “Shifting to renewable energy is an important initiative in developing greener, more resilient, and more sustainable destinations.”
Lio Estate has long practiced sustainable measures in its estate management and resort operations, as well as implementing environment-friendly practices over their locators and merchants. In 2019, it gained a spot in the ‘Top 100 Sustainable Destinations’ List. Lio Estate further plans to implement its pioneering renewable energy project at a bigger scale, such as a solar farm that can supply energy to more facilities within the estate. In 2021, the Estate committed to being a signatory to the UNWTO’s Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism.
