UNDER Earthion, Taiwanese ICT firm Acer has committed to reach 60 percent renewable energy by 2025 and 100 percent renewable energy (RE100) by 2035 and 30 percent PCR plastic content in core products by 2025. Acer products are also expected to consume 45 percent less energy by 2025, compared with the baseline year of 2016.
“A lot of companies are going green. At Acer, we take the scientific approach to going green to fulfill our promises. We have joint efforts globally to make it happen,” said Tiffany Huang, Acer co-COO and president of Corporate Marketing, Business, and Planning Operations.
In 2021, Acer announced the Aspire Vero, the company’s first sustainability-focused product, with keycaps that are 50 percent post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic, and other surfaces (including the top and bottom covers, bezels, and operating surface) that are 30 percent PCR plastic. The Vero certainly isn’t the first laptop touted to be sustainable but this is the first one that’s centered on sustainably as even the box is made from recycled paper pulp.
A year later, Acer has expanded the Vero portfolio to include two laptops and an AIO (all-in-one) desktop, monitors, projector and peripherals. These products use a percentage of PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) plastic, OBP (Ocean-Bound Plastic) and recyclable packaging. The PCs are easy to disassemble so the process of repairs or upgrades and extending their lifespan is simpler.
The two new laptops, AV14 and AV15, are coengineered with Intel and will meet the requirements of an Intel Evo laptop through Intel’s hardware specifications and key experience targets for responsiveness, instant wake, battery life, fast charge and intelligent collaboration.
“At Acer, we are not afraid to be challenged, and we are totally drawn to create. We also welcome different projects to improve,” said Huang.
“Through close collaboration with Acer, we’re building thoughtful yet powerful devices like the newest Vero line powered by 12th Gen Intel Core processors,” said Josh Newman, vice president and general manager of Mobile Innovation for Intel’s Client Computing Group.
The Vero AIO desktop for businesses has a 24-inch Full HD IPS display, and a thin-bezel design delivering an 88 percent screen-to-body ratio.
The new 23.8-inch and 27-inch Vero monitors have IPS panels and an eco-friendly design.
The Vero mouse and keyboard with near-silent keys reduce noise from typing and mouse clicks, while the Vero PD2325W projector delivers clear and precise presentations with a high 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio and broad 125 percent Rec. 709 wide color gamut.
In the Philippines, the Vero products have been well-received, said Acer Philippines Managing Director Manuel Wong.
“In Q1 alone, we managed to have more than 150 percent growth in this category. From January to February, it was 135 percent. From February to March, it was 152 percent. And also, from our marketing and social media, we have received lots of good quality feedback.”
Acer Pan Asia Pacific President Andrew Hou said the Vero portfolio expansion was consistent with Acer’s commitment to the RE100 initiative and its pledge to achieve 100 percent renewable energy use by the year 2035.
“We’re promoting the green PCs in Southeast Asia, as we have an internal goal of obtaining 30 percent revenue from green products in the next two or three years. However, there is a need to educate the market as recycled material is not always cheaper so we have different strategies for different countries,” said Hou.
