DAVAO CITY—Four countries, including the Philippines, approved 10 genetically modified (GM) crops for various purposes, from cultivation to food and feed processing.
Last month’s edition of the newsletter of the New York-headquartered International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA) said the Philippines topped the list, with 10 approvals of five crops, followed by the US with four crops, Australia with two approval one crop, and Turkey with approval on two crops.
The approvals were made from the period January 2021 to March 9 this year.
The Philippines approved GM corn with tags stacked herbicide tolerance MON87429; stacked herbicide tolerant and insect resistant MON87427 x MON89034 x TC1507 x MON87411 x 59122; glyphosate tolerant, lepidoptera resistant, coleoptera resistant MON87427 MON-87427-7 x MON-89Ø34-3 x DAS-Ø15Ø7-1 x MON-88Ø17-3 x DAS-59122-7, all for food, feed and processing. They were approved on August 5 and May 12 last year.
It also approved GM cotton MON88701 on August 5 and cotton MON88702 on May 12 also for food, feed and processing.
Bt eggplant was approved for food, feed and processing on July 21, together with Golden Rice GR2E for commercial propagation.
GM alfalfa KK179 x J101 was approved for food, feed and processing on May 12.
The US approved GM cotton MON88702 for cultivation and GM petunia event A1-DFR, also for cultivation on January 12 and 13 last year.
In August, it approved GM potato event Gen2-Z6 and maize event DP202216 for food and feed.
The following month, it approved GM maize event PY203 for cultivation.
By October, it approved maize event DBN9858 for food and feed.
in March, the US approved GM soybean event GMB151 for cultivation.
Australia approved two GM canola events, one canola MS11, in May and the other tagged MS11 × RF3 and MS11 × RF3 × MON 88302 in September last year, all for cultivation, food, feed and processing.
Turkey approved GM soybean DAS-44406-6 and GM maize DAS-40278-9 for feed use.
