Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) President Pablo Virgilio S. David urged voters to pick candidates in the 2022 polls who will to keep the “real” spirit of EDSA People Power alive.
During a virtual forum organized by Democracy Watch and ADR last Tuesday, the Caloocan bishop said candidates should be capable of preserving the ideals of the EDSA Revolution.
The iconic civil unrest ended the rule of former President Ferdinand E. Marcos.
“The candidate should not allow himself or herself to be dictated by foreigners, landowners, big businesses in pushing for the welfare of the many, especially those in the fringes of society,” David said.
The prelate said another characteristic of a candidate is someone who will respect the rights of other people, the country’s laws, and defend the country’s sovereignty especially in the West Philippine Sea in a “courageous but peaceful” manner.
He said candidates should also promote more public participation in the government, and demonstrate integrity.
“The candidate must give inspiration to the youth for them to realize their dream and aspirations for themselves, family and community,” David said.
Last Monday, several bishops reiterated that members of the clergy should remain non-partisan and not directly endorse any candidate to avoid compromising their position in the Church.
Instead, they noted the clergy should just provide guidelines to the faithful on who to vote for in the upcoming 2022 National and Local Elections.
