THERE were 4.4 million tweets about streaming platforms content from January to October 2021. Viewers had a variety of choices with streaming services providing every genre of entertainment possible on-demand, and they took to Twitter to share when new seasons or episodes dropped.
K-drama and superheroes movies, which
has expanded its audience through streaming services, appealed to global viewers of all genres. From Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha to the raves for WandaVision, Filipinos tweeted their reactions to every episode.
Aside from international content, people were also interested in locally produced content available on key platforms. A milestone for Filipino pop culture in 2021 was the release of the animated adaptation of Trese on Netflix.
Love local TV
THE rise of streaming platforms does not dampen the continuous growth of conversations around local TV in the Philippines. There were over 27.4 million tweets about the shows He’s Into Her and The World Between Us.
Celebrities also dominated the conversation about local TV as fans continued to tweet their support for their favorite individual stars and loveteams like Maine Mendoza and DonBelle.
Cinema feels at home
EVEN if most cinemas are still closed, the conversation around cinema and movies is going steady in the Philippines.
Twitter recorded more than 3 million tweets about cinema from January to October 2021, most of which were tweets celebrating locally produced movies, such as Princess DayaReese and Hello Stranger: The Movie, and the strong interest in the actors who topbilled these movies.
International movies also remained popular, proving that Filipinos are among the first movers when it comes to knowing the latest in global content, from seeing the much-awaited Justice League Snyder Cut and hyping the buzz for Spider-Man No Way Home.
Staying in tune
THE biggest growth on Twitter regarding entertainment conversations went to music with a whopping 92.8 million tweets from January to October 2021. Stan Twitter is home to many fandoms.
Filipino group SB19 ruled the scene, and was and still is the most talked-about band in the country.
Since the Philippines is one of the top markets on K-pop Twitter conversations, some of the most talked-about artists in the stan Twitter world were BTS, EXO and TWICE.
