FROM beauty to technology, sustainability is a big word in business. It can no longer be denied that the planet’s resources are being depleted at alarming rates.
The Corporate Knights’ Global 100 Index is one of the organizations that gives recognition to the world’s most sustainable corporations. It provides an annual ranking of the world’s 100 most sustainable companies. The index assesses the performance of companies with more than $1 billion in revenues, considering their actions on environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues.
Corporate Knights Inc. is a media and research company focused on quantifying and animating sustainable economy drivers for decision-makers. Its best known rankings include the Best 50 Corporate Citizens in Canada and the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations. Corporate Knights is the first print business magazine and research firm in the world to be a Certified B Corp.
The list of awardees has been published annually since 2005 by Corporate Knights in recognition of companies that deliver superior financial performance and lead the race to zero emissions. Their methodology is based on up to 24 key performance indicators covering resource management, employee management, financial management, clean revenue and clean investment and supplier performance.
Consumer durables and electronics manufacturer Arçelik A.Ş. has, for the second year in a row, ranked on the Corporate Knights’ 2022 Global 100 Index, coming in at 57th place.
Arçelik A.Ş. is the mother company of European appliance company Beko.
Arçelik has taken great strides in achieving its sustainability commitments. The company announced at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference that it has re-submitted more ambitious science-based targets for Scope 1, 2 emissions and also for Scope 3 GHG emissions from the use of sold products, pushing for a 50.4 percent reduction across all three scopes.
This commitment, which is now waiting for the Science Based Targets Initiative’s approval, is proof of Arçelik’s commitment to a more sustainable future.
“We are delighted to rank on the Corporate Knights’ 2022 Global 100 Index. As a business, we understand we have a commitment and a responsibility to sustainability, and this recognition continues to spur us on. At Arçelik, we have taken great steps on our sustainability journey and are continuing to. We are proud of what we have achieved with all our employees, and our revised commitments to Scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions are a demonstration of that,” said Arçelik CEO Hakan Bulgurlu.
“As makers of appliances, we will help ensure a more sustainable future for the next generations. We are also eager to adapt our existing technologies to make all our appliances more environmentally friendly too,” said Gürhan Günal, country manager of Beko Pilipinas Corp.
In 2021, Arçelik also achieved the highest score within the DHP Household Durables sector in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) for the third consecutive year, and CEO Hakan Bulgurlu joined The World Economic Forum Alliance of CEO Climate Leaders, a group of 70 global chief executives who are driving cross-sector collaboration to accelerate the transition to a net-zero economy.
As part of Arçelik’s commitment to sustainability, Beko unveiled seven sustainable products including a washing machine/washer dryer, oven, tumble dryer, refrigerator, espresso coffee maker and dishwasher to help consumers reduce their impact on the environment. The innovative products use recycled materials such as PET bottles, fishing nets; bio-composites such as coffee residue and eggshells; as well as detergent-saving technologies for sustainable living.
