FDA grants EUA for donated Sinopharm vaccines

Domingo

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted emergency use authorization (EUA) for Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccines donated to the government.

“Today (June 7) we already issued an emergency use authorization to DOH to accept the donations of Sinopharm,” FDA director general Eric Domingo said during the public address of President R. Rodrigo on Monday.

The EUA is an assurance from the FDA that a vaccine is effective and safe to use.

Domingo said the FDA made the decision after Sinopharm’s vaccine passed the evaluation of the vaccine expert panel.

Also considered was the inclusion of the vaccine in the  Emergency Use Listing of the of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Sinopharm previously only had a compassionate use permit from the FDA.

The CSP allows a vaccine to be used locally, but on the condition the physician who recommended its use will be held responsible in ensuring the safety of its recipient.
