In this time of the pandemic, eight months of 2020 and counting — maybe until such time there is final cure against the coronavirus — we all need to be healthy by boosting our immune system.
That’s why Chef MG has decided to come up with food products that’s plant-based: with nutritious, healthy fresh fruits and vegetables as main ingredients which are easily available in the neighborhood stores and talipapa.
Initially, the Garcias (Mark, Melissa, Michelle and Marie Angeline), the siblings behind Chef MG, thought of online jobs they can do on a work-from-home, part-time basis during the start of the lockdown mid March this year. But they ended up baking and selling bread products online instead.
Mark who has over 10 years expertise in the BPO until his contract was reduntiated in May because of the pandemic, handles the nearby deliveries. Melissa (Missy) has 3 years experience as Cost/Business Analyst in a restaurant chain business which she now uses for Chef MG. She also takes charge of online posting and delivery schedules.
Michelle (Mich) is the main chef and baker owing to the HRM diploma she got this year couple with her creative hands and ‘nosey’ & meticulous ways in the kitchen. She also takes charge of online shopping to scout for affordable suppliers.
Angeline, the ALS student, who has to hone her baking skills, which she had started in school, assists in simple tasks and is the favorite endorser.
After months of product tests and perfecting their ingredients, initially intended for family snacks during the lockdown, the siblings started selling the yummy goodness in cake loaves of Choco-Banana, Carrot-Pineapple, Fruity Squash, SweetCorn and SuperChoco (also available in cupcakes) among their friends in June. With good reception, they decided to come up with the business name, which is Chef MG Pastry Products Manufaturing, and registered with the Department of Trade and Industry in July.
Finding more business opportunities
According to the startup entreps, Chef MG’s immediate plan is to come up with more healthy bread products utilizing fresh fruits and vegetables readily available in the market such as the potato, sweet camote, ube, taro (or gabi), malunggay, ampalaya, etc.
Mich: “If we can come up with a Bahay Kubo loaf, then we will do it. We want the healthy side minus the trimmings, as much as possible, to do away with too much carbs, cholesterol, sugar, sodium and unnecessary flavorings. Missy and I have allergies, so we want to do away with allergens. Angeline, too, and other peeps with healthy needs like her, is a major consideration, in our product development.”
Missy: “And soon, we would love to offer ‘paluto’ for our favorite viands such as menudo, kaldereta, adobo, tofu sisig and kare-kare. Our friends, mostly way back from college, know our parents cook well. They’ve been wanting to taste these foods again that were prepared during mine & Mich’s 18th birthdays.”
Mark: “Then maybe we can have a snack counter or mini coffee shop right here at home where a number of friends & customers can come following the current health protocols. We would be concocting healthy drinks as well to go with our breads. I love coffee, so that’s no. 1 on the list, of course.”
Sending cheers and love to frontliners & elderlies
When the stricter quarantine was imposed once again in August upon the request of the country’s medical frontliners, the siblings decided to do their part by coming up with ‘Chef MG Loves the Frontliners’ promo. The three-for-P500 loaves encourages buyers to buy and share the goodies to frontliners to send them some cheers via healthy snacks. Aside from the promo, the siblings bake extra loaves or cupcakes to share more.
By September, Chef MG extended the promo to share love, this time, to the elderlies. The lolos and lolas, after all, have been hardly hit by anxiety and fears brought by the pandemic.
Chef MG intends to share more for the Christmas season as it also aspires to produce more healthy food products. Product combinations have been set and published in its official FB page (@chefmgph) to come up with exciting promos and more affordable food items.
Further, Chef MG also welcomes partnership, collaboration, and sponsorship to accomplish its cause of sending good vibes and positivity to all via healthy, yummy bread snacks. Resellers are also welcomed.
