As part of BusinessMirror’s campaign to promote everyone’s safety and well-being during the global health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we have invited established and independent artists to perform at least one song in their own homes while urging everyone to stay indoors.
Jean Tan is a singer-songwriter based in Singapore who specializes in music best described as “a blend of folk, indie, and vocal jazz.”
Born with a cleft palate, Jean was told by doctors that she won’t be able to speak properly, let alone sing. Later, she was diagnosed with kidney disease at the age of 24.
How she was able to defy those odds and not only live a meaningful live while finding success in her passion for music are detailed in numerous featured articles published in prestigious media outlets in Singapore including The Straits Times, Esquire, Impact Magazine and Buro 24/7.
Known for incorporating her experiences into her music, Jean has performed for organizations like Halogen Foundation, World Vision, Relief Singapore, Operation Smile, and Architects of Life. She has also headlined festivals and music showcases around the world, including Southeast Asian Games, Singapore Night Festival, Esplanade’s All Things New and Come Together festivals, and Zandari Festa in Seoul, Korea.
Her 2017 EP, Hideaway features songs like “Crowns,” which surpassed 100,000 streaming plays within two months of release. Expanding her Asian presence, Jean’s songs, “6.55pm” and “Waiting for Love” have also been featured in two Korean mini-series namely Barefoot Diva and Le Jour.
Gracing this special edition of SoundStrip Live & in Quarantine, Jean is performing a lovely, acoustic rendition of her latest single, the bluesy “Oak Cherry Wine” which is a love letter that hints of her personal health struggles and the man, in this case–her husband–who chooses to hold her hand and remain by her side. And like the tasteful wine that Jean is singing about, love can only get better with time.
