As part of BusinessMirror’s campaign to promote everyone’s safety and well-being during the global health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we have invited established and independent artists to perform at least one song in their own homes while urging everyone to stay indoors.
Field Day (stylized as FIELD DAY) is a band based in Metro Manila, composed of EJ Santiago vocals, Carlo Bañez on guitars, Rommel Hugo on bass and Eric Dy on drums.
Formed in 2016, the band is heavily influenced by late ’80s to early 2000s alternative rock bands such as The Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, Blur, and Hum, and is likewise inspired by their local heroes such as the Eraserheads, Teeth, and Sandwich.
According to EJ, their song, “Rocket” which they chose to perform for SoundStip Live & in Quarantine was the first song that they professionally recorded and released on online streaming platforms.
“The song was already complete in 2017, but we were only able to record it professionally in 2019. The demo version of the song, however, has been played on the radio in 2018, on the segment, Locals Only, by Jam 88.3. We called the song “Rocket” because of the picture that our guitarist, Carlo, used when he posted the demo riff of the song on his Soundcloud, wherein his nephew was in an astronaut costume, standing beside a rocketship,” EJ shared.
EJ further revealed that he patterned the lyrics of “Rocket” to that image in the sense that he imagined being aboard a rocketship bound for space, with no one else but the person he wanted to be with.
As for the song’s track art on Spotify, EJ said it was an edited picture of Taipei 101 and was made by the band’s drummer, Eric.
FIELD DAY currently has four songs on Spotify, all worth checking out.
