Financial technology player PayMaya launched on Thursday a new program that will help local government units (LGUs) build cashless ecosystems to allow them to adapt to the so-called new normal.
Called the Lead Program or LGUs Embracing and Accelerating Digitalization, the initiative will help local governments transform their cities and provinces to be more digital to lessen human interaction. Specifically, the program will aid local governments in bringing cashless services to their constituents. “Consumers and businesses around the country are increasingly opting for cashless payment methods for their day-to-day needs, and we’re seeing the government, especially LGUs, stepping up and adapting quickly in order to serve the requirements of their constituents,” PayMaya CEO Orlando Vea said.
Through PayMaya, he said, government may enable their citizens to transact with government through online and mobile channels, help merchants and businesses to accept contactless payments, and facilitate financial aid and disburse government benefits through digital finance.
“LGUs are at the forefront of delivering government service to citizens since they are at the grassroots. Ensuring that they are equipped with the right digital financial tools is therefore the primary goal of PayMaya’s Lead program,” Vea said.
So far, PayMaya has worked with the local governments of Manila, Mandaluyong, Pasig, Caloocan, Valenzuela, and Quezon City in promoting cashless transactions amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
