The Department of Education (DepEd) on Thursday denied that teachers are being ordered to visit communities to convince parents to enroll their children for School Year 2020-2021.
This, as Undersecretary Jesus Mateo said that the DepEd is still filling 10,000 teacher vacancies in public schools for 2020.
“Based on our data teacher:pupil ratio [for] Elementary 1:29, Junior High School: 1.26, and Senior High School 1:32,” Mateo said.
Reacting to the statement of Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) claiming that several teachers were deployed to conduct house-to-house visits to convince parents to enroll their children , the DepEd said it is not true.
“Upon checking with field units, this claim by this group has been found to be false and without factual basis,” the DepEd said in a statement.
No complaints, the DepEd said, were received from any of the areas mentioned.
These areas are: Baler, Aurora; San Andres, Catanduanes; Santander and Compostela, Cebu; Tandag, Surigao del Sur; Albay Province; Isabela Province; and some areas in Region VIII and Region X.
“We would like to emphasize that when the LCP (Learning Continuity Plan )
was formulated before the enrollment period, part of the protocol required teachers to check the status of their former learners.”
Checking on the status of children, according to DepEd can be done by text, by telephone and other means.
“The objective is to reconfirm whether learners shall participate in the incoming school year, in light of the Covid-19 situation. We also included a survey to determine the limitations and needs of the students. The alleged enrollment quota is not true,” the DepEd added.
As of 8 a.m of July 2, a total of 17, 310, 642 learners have enrolled in both public and private schools nationwide. Of the number 760, 426 were enrolled in private schools.
