As part of BusinessMirror’s campaign to promote everyone’s safety and well-being during the global health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we have invited established and independent artists to perform at least one song in their own homes while urging everyone to stay indoors.
Since backing up Nino Mendoza for his Blue Jean Junkies US tour in 2019, Robin Nievera, Buwi Meneses of Parokya ni Edgar and Wolf Gemora, formerly of Wolfgang and Lokomotiv, enjoyed playing together so much that they decided to continue performing as a band, especially after another US-based rocker, Melody del Mundo of Sugar Hiccup jammed with them in one gig.
Melody, who was in Manila in 2017 for the launch of Sugar Hiccup’s fourth and possibly final album, Closure, revealed that her new band, now known as The Mellow Dee’s was formed in August of 2019 but only started performing publicly last October. On dates when Wolf cannot play with the band, the band usually asks Vic Mercado of Bamboo, who’s also based in the US and operates a recording studio in Jersey City, to play drums for them.
In a subsequent interview with SoundStrip, Buwi revealed that since the band members have become accustomed to performing originals, hooking up with Melody proved to be timely as she had just written four new songs prior and presented them to the band when the Mellow Dee’s was just taking shape.
Calling their sound “lounge punk,” the Mellow Dee’s now have 10 original songs in their arsenal and was in fact, ready to enter the studio to record them when the COVID-19 pandemic struck. Sharpening their chops while in quarantine, Robin, Buwi and their friend Max Cogert recently graced SoundStrip Live & in Quarantine with a riveting video jam called “Panic.”
Now as the supergroup, The Mellow Dee’s with Melody and Wolf, Robin and Buwi are ready to rock the pandemic again with their lounge punk stylings in this quarantine performance of “Runnin’,” exclusive only on SoundStrip Live & in Quarantine.
