As part of BusinessMirror’s campaign to promote everyone’s safety and well-being during the global health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we have invited established and independent artists to perform at least one song in their own homes while urging everyone to stay indoors.
Dubbed as “Indie Hugot Princess” by her own contemporaries, singer-songwriter Anna Aquino has been taking her craft very seriously since she was 15. By 2013, she was already joining bar gigs and open mic nights.
Along the way, Anna was able to perform with the likes of Join the Club, Soapdish, I Belong To The Zoo, Brisom, Jem Cubil, Jana Garcia and Calein. 2019 was a particularly big year for her as she scored a big hit with “Biglaan” which generated over 100,000 streams within a month of its release. On the strength of this song and her subsequent singles, “Unti-Unti” and “Narcissist,” Anna’s monthly listeners on Spotify alone is currently over 27,000.
As part of her development, Anna also attended both the FILSCAP and PhilPop songwriting bootcamps where her mentors included Jungee Marcelo, Rico Blanco, Quest and Trina Belamide. That same year, she also performed at the Wish 107.5 Roadshow.
Here at SoundStrip Live & in Quarantine, Anna performs her brand new composition called “Distansya.” According to her, the song is based on her observations about the things people post on social media since the Enhanced Community Quarantine took effect.
“Because most of us are staying at home, being consumed by social media, people are fighting and berating each other, not mindful of the words they say that can hurt other people. We should start practicing a healthy social media environment. And if it feels too much, practice social media distancing,” she pointed out.
But that’s not all. “On the second part of my song, I explained that not all of us have a choice to stay at home, so as an individual, it is our responsibility to strengthen our immune system and observe social distancing,” she added.
With a songwriting style that emphasizes her flair for storytelling and a lovely voice that has the discipline to ramp up and temper the hugot factor when needed, Anna Aquino is certainly one of the most intriguing young artists to watch out for.
