As part of BusinessMirror’s campaign to promote everyone’s safety and well-being during the global health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we have invited established and independent artists to perform at least one song in their own homes while urging everyone to stay indoors.
A man of many talents, Al Dimalanta, son of celebrated poet Ophelia Dimalanta, has worn many hats throughout his life and career including that of writer, public relations practitioner, photographer, visual artist and professor.
Most people, however, will always associate Al with music, rock music in particular and punk rock music to be even more specific. As leader of the seminal punk band, the Dead Ends, Al is considered as one of the pioneers of the genre in the Philippine setting and remains one of the most revered figures in Pinoy rock.
With his outspoken political views, he also helped raise the level of punk rock to the point of discourse with anthemic tunes like “Complaints,” “New Life,” “Johnny Loves Hardcourse” and more.
After Dead Ends, Al continued to pick up where he left off with his subsequent bands, Throw and the thrash metal outfit, As We Defy.
For this edition of SoundStrip Live & in Quarantine, Al performs the thought-provoking “Panahon,” a bluesy, folk number he only wrote recently and was inspired by some of his realizations while in “quarantine.”
