Pinoy Rock legend was part of a later incarnation of the band Anak Bayan that backed up Sampaguita for her first two albums. Credited with writing Sampaguita’s best-known songs like “Bonggahan,” “Tao,” “Sa Diyos Lamang,” “Easy Pare” and “Laguna” among others, Gary wrote the equally iconic “Sirang Plaka” and “Pagbabalik ng Kwago” for Anak Bayan.
Along with Jun Lopito, Wally Gonzalez and Resty Fabunan, Gary is also regarded as one of the finest rock guitarists of his generation. Gracing SoundStrip Live & in Quarantine, Gary chooses to perform the power ballad, “Tao” which was originally recorded by Sampaguita in 1978 with his band for her debut album. It was also later released as the B-side to the monster hit, “Bonggahan” and has over the years, has become one of the most well-loved Pinoy Rock ballads of all-time.
In deconstructing “Tao,” Gary gives a surprisingly detailed explanation of the song’s lyrics and how it relates to the present COVID-19 crisis. He also presents the song, as sung by partner April “Anika” Canlas in dimly-lit fashion.
