When suddenly your regular routine is put on hold due to the community quarantine, and circumstances seemed out of your control, you can’t help but harbor a negative outlook as we deal with COVID-19 pandemic. The highly infectious virus has impacted every aspect of our lives and the sudden disruption comes with the pressure of immediate changes in our daily routine, modifying our pattern of behavior. Thus, in order to cope with the new set up, no matter how temporary, being adaptive and resilient had become crucial responses.
To ease one to the challenges of staying home as a safety precaution, here are several ways to keep yourself busy and make the most of the quarantine period:
Establish new routines. Since we have taken comfort with our former schedules, we should welcome the opportunity to establish new routines predominantly inside our homes with family members. It will help a great deal to structure the day where every member of the household is kept busy, productive, and having fun as well. Planned activities may include attending to daily chores, having free time for hobbies and games, and completing simple home projects such as scrapbooking, decluttering, and home gardening. This is also a good time to give your pets extra attention and grooming.
Reboot your health. Eating on time, getting enough sleep, and moving your body daily are particularly important these days to keep our body strong and healthy. Staying in our homes now gives us ample time to prepare balanced meals, follow a daily exercise regime, and sleep early. Now is the best time to make use those exercise machines and free weights, or follow those tons of exercise videos available on YouTube. You can also check out fitness groups that offer live videos of easy to do exercise routines. This is also the best way to combat frequent snacking though out the day. Set your health goals and stick to your schedule every day for the best results.
Stay connected. During this intense situation, we must learn to make use of our time to take comfort from our relationships and find hope in art, music, and books. Fight boredom and feeling helplessness by taking time to talk to your friends and family members. This is critical to stave off the feeling of isolation. If the opportunity arises, extend help to your neighbors, and donate to institutions that are caring for the frontliners.
You can fill your day positive vibes by being creative and starting art projects, listening to your favorite music, and reading inspirational books. Watch movies that tickle your funny bones, or those so-called feel good movies. You can also use this time to attend to your spiritual needs by staying connected to your religious community.
Having a sense of accomplishment can help you rationalize our current circumstances, however, when you still feel you’re having cabin fever and anxious, it’s also good to remember why we are staying home and taking a break from outside activities. Such a simple act is one of the ways to keep the virus from spreading to our community that, in turn, could save lives. Staying home can keep yourself and your family members from contracting the deadly virus. By keeping ourselves healthy physically and mentally, we are contributing to the efforts to flatten the curve and ease the burden of our medical institutions.
