More women were raped, physically abused, sexually exploited and trafficked in 2019, according to the latest data obtained by the Philippine Statistics Authority from the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
PSA data culled from DSWD showed that as of February 2020, around 420 women were victims of trafficking in 2019, a 66.7-percent increase from 252 women in 2018.
DSWD data also showed, PSA said, that some 222 women were sexually exploited in 2019. This was 55.2 percent higher than the 143 posted in 2018.
Data obtained by the PSA from the PNP as of February 2020 indicated there were 2,162 rape cases reported to the police in 2019, 30.6 percent higher than the 1,656 cases reported in 2018.
There was also a double-digit or 15.1-percent increase in the physical injuries cases reported to the PNP in 2019.
Data obtained by PSA that as of February 2020, there were 16,251 physical injury cases reported to the PNP in 2019, from 14,116 cases in 2018.
PSA reported that more women reported that they experienced acts of lasciviousness and other abuses, with increases at 3.2 percent and 2.8 percent, respectively.
Government data indicated that there was a 45.4-percent decline in the number of cases of attempted rape to 362 last year from 663 in 2018. There were no available data for incestuous rape in 2019.
Citing DSWD data, the PSA said there was 5.2-percent increase in women who were involved in prostitution or emotionally abused last year. There were 268 cases of prostitution or emotional abuse in 2019, higher than the 255 reported in 2018.
Data such as illegal recruitment; other cases such as battered, economically abused, neglected/abandoned by husband, and distressed overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) served in the field offices; sexual abuse; women affected by armed conflict; and physical abuse/maltreated/battered posted declines.
Women who experienced illegal recruitment contracted 56.9 percent to 85 cases in 2019 while other cases such as battered, economically abused, neglected/abandoned by husband, and distressed OFWs served in the field offices contracted 55.2 percent to 2,048 cases.
PSA said sexual abuse contracted 23.7 percent to 164 cases; women affected by armed conflict, 18.8 percent to 13 cases; and physical abuse/maltreated/battered, 16.5 percent to 198 cases in 2019.
The data was included in the PSA’s Women and Men in the Philippines fact sheet and were gathered from the latest surveys, statistical reports and publications.
This included the 2019 Labor Force Survey, 2018 Survey on Overseas Filipinos, 2018 Family Income and Expenditure Survey, 2017 National Demographic and Health Survey, among others.
The PSA also obtained data from administrative-based sources, such as the business name registration from the Department of Trade and Industry, and number of cases served by the DSWD.
