UNIVERSITY of the East (UE) stamped its might anew in fencing by sweeping two gold medals in women’s action and another one in the girls’ division in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 82 competitions on Wednesday at the Paco Arena.
The Lady Warriors went 1-2 in women’s individual saber with Queendenise Dalmacio beating Elvielyn Joy Javinar, 15-5, in the final.
Maxine Esteban, on the other hand, lost her chance to retain the women’s individual saber crown—and Ateneo’s back-to-back championship—after absorbing a 6-15 defeat to Javinar in the semifinals.
The 20-year-old reigning women’s Most Valuable Player, who won the individual foil on Tuesday, failed to reach the podium in individual epee.
The Blue Eagles bagged their first men’s gold as Jaime Viceo topped the individual foil event by nipping two-time MVP Sammuel Tranquilan of the Red Warriors by slimmest of margins, 15-14.
UE remained on top of the men’s medals race with a 2-2-0 gold-silver-medal tally heading into Thursday’s team events.
With a 2-1-2 haul after two days, the Lady Warriors are back to where they belong—on top.
UE earned its first women’s gold courtesy of Rein Bustos, who beat University of Santo Tomas’s Marielle Peralta, 15-10, in individual epee. UST’s Mira Dorimon and De La Salle’s Divine Romero settled for the bronze medals.
UST’s Fhaym Sarrondo, meanwhile, joined Esteban on the individual saber podium. UST’s Samuel Mangarin and De La Salle’s Jose Lorenzo Mercado took home the individual foil bronze.
Graduating star Samantha Catantan, meanwhile, beat Angel Beltran, 15-6, in an all-UE girls individual saber final to claim her second gold of the season.
Andrea Matias led the Recto-based squad in another 1-2 finish in girls epee, scoring a 15-13 win over Jaymi delos Santos.
Gunning for a ninth consecutive girls title, UE has collected three golds and three silvers.
The Junior Warriors also continued their dominance as Shawn Felipe beat his brother, reigning MVP Prince John, 15-9, to capture the individual foil gold in another all-UE finale.
The 10-peat seeking Junior Warriors now have a two-day haul of of 3-1-2 haul.
UST completed the podium in girls individual saber courtesy of Kristel Chacon and Kim Tuy, as well as in the girls individual epee courtesy of Rose Mira and Bhea Raguin.
Ateneo’s Aidan Feliciano Reyes and Seth Cucio clinched the boys individual foil bronze medals.
