Asia United Bank (AUB), one of the fastest growing universal banks in the Philippines, has partnered with Grab Philippines to enable the acceptance of GrabPay QR code transactions in Starbucks outlets in the Philippines using AUB PayMate.
AUB PayMate is a digital payment channel that allows merchants to accept QR payments from Chinese tourists. With the launch of AUB PayMate, AUB became the first bank to have launched QR payment acceptance for WeChat Pay, AliPay, and Union Pay QR. In 2019, AUB PayMate partnered with GCash and now GrabPay, enabling merchant outlets in the country to accept QR payments from Filipino customers.
“We are excited to further support Starbucks in their payment acceptance innovation as we consider them as one of the most innovative retail global brands, and this fits AUB’s strong appetite for embarking on forward thinking solutions. GrabPay brings in another element of excitement in this partnership as it is not only highly groundbreaking, but has a strong customer following and engagement,” said AUB President Manuel A. Gomez.
GrabPay, which is operated by Grab Philippines, powers all cashless payments for Grab services – from hailing rides to ordering food deliveries.
“The AUB PayMate – GrabPay implementation will allow Starbucks’ front liners to input the transaction in their point of sale system. GrabPay’s e-wallet customers will place their dynamic QR code in front of Starbucks’ scanner and the transaction is done, providing seamless convenience to both the cashier and the customers. This implementation is one of the innovative product roll-outs you can expect from GrabPay,” said GrabPay Head Jonny Bates.
This partnership is welcomed by Starbucks Philippines President Noey Lopez as an added customer experience innovation for its clientele. “The addition of GrabPay users’ QR payment, together with the other QR brands accepted using AUB PayMate, positions us closer to our guiding principle of making Starbucks the “Third Place” – a welcoming place beyond the home and the workplace where people could simply enjoy cups of quality coffee.” Lopez further said.
According to Mags Surtida, AUB First Vice President and Group Business Head for Credit Cards and Acquiring, “With GrabPay as the new addition to our roster of QR brands accepted by our merchants, we are able to put more value to the AUB PayMate product as the only QR payment acceptance facility in the market that accepts the most number of QR brands.”
