Multi-awarded actress and pop singer Karen Mok can now add a world record to her list of accolades.
In celebration of her 25th anniversary as an entertainer, the Chinese superstar attempted to perform on what is literally considered as the world’s highest stage. She achieved the feat last October 12 when she performed in Lhasa, Tibet as part of her current world tour, The Ultimate Karen Mok Show.
As certified by the Guinness World Records, Mok was pretty much on top of the world when she became the very first artist to hold a solo stadium concert at the highest altitude world stage measuring 3,646.308 meters or 11,962.95 feet.
With almost 13,000 cheering fans in attendance at the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, dubbed as the “Roof of the World,” Mok could not hold back her tears after learning it was made official that she has conquered her dreams.
“Today is the day when dreams come true. I seldom cry on the stage, but today is really an extraordinary experience. I have always dreamed of having a concert here. Thank you all for accompanying me to complete this challenge.”
What makes Mok’s challenge even more rewarding is the fact that at almost 4,000 meters above sea level, Lhasa is regarded as part of an “unprecedented polar region.” Due to altitude sickness, it is very rare for pop singers to even consider performing in the city.
In preparation for her record-breaking concert and also to prevent altitude sickness, Mok and her team self-regulated their diet to keep their bodies in good condition since the 20-month world tour kicked off in June of last year.
With Mok performing for about two hours in the 34th show of her tour, all that careful planning and preparation have paid off in spades. Having added another feather in her cap, Karen Mok continues her world tour with more dates in Asia and Australia in the coming days.
