Syndrome X, or more commonly known as metabolic syndrome, is a group of risk factors that a patient experiences all at the same time, which increases his or her chances of having a heart disease, stroke attack or Type 2 diabetes.
It is also known as insulin resistance syndrome, which means that the body is not using the insulin effectively; thus, increasing the rate of the blood sugar.
Diabetes is a lifetime metabolic disorder. It is marked by abnormally high sugar in the blood. This happens when the pancreas fail to make enough insulin, or makes too much insulin, which the body couldn’t use. When the food enters the body and is broken down and used for energy, the pancreas creates the insulin. This insulin is supposed to move glucose (sugar which enters the bloodstream and is a source of fuel for the body) from the bloodstream into the muscle, fat and liver cells where it can be used as an energy source. But when there’s too much or too little insulin, diabetes sets in.
In an interview on Radyo Klinika at DWIZ 882 KHZ AM, Dr. Rey Salinel, Jr., a diabetologist of Ospital ng Maynila and Manila Doctor’s Hospital (text: 0949-608-9777), said that there are two major types of diabetes. In the Type 1 diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, the body makes little or no insulin. Five percent of the people in the world have this condition. In Type 2, the pancreas produces a lot of insulin, which couldn’t be used by the body or the pancreas does not make enough insulin to keep blood glucose normal because the body does not respond well to insulin.
Dr. Salinel said the normal blood sugar level (fasting blood sugar) is between 70 to 100 mg/dl. If a person’s blood sugar level is between 101 to 125 mg/dl, this is already considered a prediabetic condition and should be treated immediately with diabetes medicines.
On the other hand, bad cholesterol can also contribute to metabolic syndrome. Edwin Bien, Integrative Medicine doctor of Le Bien Wellness (text: 0999-414-5144), said to Radyo Klinika that the increased levels of low density lipoprotein or bad cholesterol is one of the symptoms of metabolic syndrome. Obesity is one of the culprits, as well as poor diet and lack of physical activity.
Exercise and the right diet can help prevent the onset of different illnesses related to metabolic syndrome.
Dr. Bien shared juice recipe, which can make one lose 10 pounds in just a month.
What you need:
