What could Philippine defense chief Delfin Lorenzana be discussing with Beijing’s man in Manila, Zhao Jianhua? The two men were snapped by a BusinessMirror photographer in what seemed to be a serious conversation at the gallery of the Senate session hall on Monday morning, at the opening of the 18th Senate.
Lorenzana has recently been quoted in reports as saying he’s doing some serious shopping for military hardware as part of the Philippines’ Armed Forces modernization program—a road map that, in turn, keeps assuming increased urgency each time China moves to expand its presence in the South China Sea, especially in areas within the exclusive economic zone of countries like the Philippines.
The DND secretary has said he’s doing some serious “shopping” in Europe and elsewhere.
