THE closure of Marcos Bridge, which links northern and eastern parts of Metro Manila, has been moved by one week to May 11, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) annnounced on Thursday.
The MMDA decided to delay the road closure , originally scheduled on May 4, following a coordination meeting with Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and its private contractor and SM Marikina on Thursday.
An ocular inspection led by MMDA officials in the area showed that the private contractors are not yet ready to push through with the Marcos Bridge Rehabilitation project that would affect motorists, truckers, and commuters in the eastern part of Metro Manila.
Private contractors have yet to open an intersection for trucks traversing the area; install traffic signal for trucks from Libis going to Katipunan in Quezon City; open a slot at the median island for eastbound vehicular traffic or vehicles from Cubao to Antipolo and install all signages informing the public of the project.
The MMDA gave the private contractors a week to complete the necessary preparations to minimize inconvenience from the closure.
Earlier, the MMDA announced the closure of the eastbound portion of Marcos Bridge for a period of four to five months to give way to its long-overdue rehabilitation. Claudeth Mocon-Ciriaco
