I have often pondered the relationship between happiness and success and I have come to the definitive conclusion that they are directly correlated. This is nothing new and it has very strong support from business concepts such as self-fulfilling prophecy and market expectations. Essentially, this means that when you expect something to happen, your actions will precede the actual event and dictate what actions you will take to reflect your expectation.
For example, if you expect the peso to depreciate against the US dollar and the general sentiment of the market is the same, then people will start selling the peso and buy the US dollar in anticipation of the depreciation of the peso. This will, of course, create a demand for the US dollar and an increasing supply of the peso which will result in the depreciation of the peso. Of course, there are fundamental factors or events that may lead people to have a certain expectation that would logically lead to the depreciation of the peso. Events such as higher imports than exports, declining OFW remittances, political uncertainty or a weak domestic economy, will lead people to conclude that the peso will depreciate and their actions will lead to a self-fulfilling prophecy.
What about happiness, how will that translate into success? Intuitively, when a person is happy, they are in a more positive frame of mind, friendlier, patient, listen better and have a better attitude. All of these provide a fertile ground for opportunities to prosper and be taken advantage of. There are a number of books on the power of positive thinking, which documents exhaustive studies that support the phenomenon of visualization and how your mind can change your world.
In my own experience, if I am happy, I tend to be more creative, better utilize networks built over the years, come up with superior win-win solutions, and of course improve my chances of success. The beauty with all of this is that it becomes a self-perpetuating upward spiral. The happier you are the more successful you become and the more successful you are the happier you get!
Of course success and happiness brings many other advantages. Without a doubt, happiness reduces stress which is well known to have serious consequences to your health such as triggering cancer, hypertension and other disorders. Studies have also shown that countries with a higher per-capita income have in general longer life spans. We can only expect that the more successful you become, you will have more access to better health care, better nutrition, better living conditions and better education, all of which results in a longer life span.
Try it out for yourself, if you are ill tempered and grouchy, chances are people will avoid you and not bother to communicate with you. You have little or no chance to make friends. On the other hand, if you have a pleasant disposition and a smiling face, you will be more approachable and it will be easier for you to make friends. Who knows, maybe one of these new friends may be able to help you in something or be a key to an opportunity.
Success through happiness is a sure thing. Even if you do not achieve material success, just being in a state of happiness is success in itself!
