SAN NARCISO, Zambales—Two municipal councilors of Subic, Zambales, narrowly escaped death on Monday when still-unidentified suspects waylaid them at a remote area here just before dusk and peppered their vehicle with gunshots.
Fifty-year-old Roberto Delgado and Elizaldy Rocafor, 47, who are both members of the Sangguniang Bayan of Subic, sustained gunshot wounds on different parts of their body but survived the ambush.
According to a report from Zambales police provincial director Senior Supt. Felix Verbo Jr., the ambush happened at about 5:55 p.m. on December 17, Monday, while the victims were traversing the highway at Sito Samat, Barangay Simminublan in this town.
Delgado was driving his silver Toyota Fortuner with Rocafor onboard and going south when a red vehicle reportedly overtook them and then opened fire.
Poilice said Delgado’s vehicle was riddled with bullets, with some of the shots wounding the two occupants of the vehicle.
After the shooting, the suspects fled on a northerly direction, witnesses told the police.
Responding policemen and rescue personnel immediately brought the victims to the San Marcelino District Hospital for initial treatment, but were later transferred to the Baypointe Medical Center in the Subic Bay Freeport.
Police said that they still have to pin the motive for the ambush.
Still, Verbo said the Zambales Provincial Crime Laboratory has processed the crime scene and thrown a dragnet for the identification and arrest of the suspects.
Meanwhile, Subic Mayor Jay Khonghun said he was praying for the fast recovery of his two council members, adding that “God heals.”
In his social media post, Khonghun also commented “Not to violence” and added his hope for “Peaceful elections.”
