HARMAN International Industries Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., recently announced its “engineering partnership” with its parent, the industry leader for consumer Internet of Things (IoT) technology and the easiest way for people to turn a traditional home into a smart home with sensors, smart devices and a native mobile application.
A statement issued on March 21 from Stamford, Connecticut, said the company will deploy “a global team” of engineers from a division of Harman that will help develop and support the application and device development of Samsung’s platform it calls “SmartThings.”
“With Gartner Inc. predicting that 20.4 billion connected devices will be used worldwide by 2020, Samsung is proving it is a leader in this space as the SmartThings platform is currently in over 1 million homes and the SmartThings cloud is connected to over 10 million devices,” said Harman, which was bought by Samsung in 2016. “Together, Harman and Samsung will continue to accelerate the adoption and solution development across key industry verticals.”
“It’s more important than ever to be at the cutting-edge of digital transformation and connected devices,” Samsung Chief Technology Officer Robert Parker was quoted in the statement as saying. “By partnering with Harman, we’re able to bring the latest smart device innovations directly to consumers.”
“We’re thrilled to be an engineering partner for Samsung and to help grow the SmartThings ecosystem,” Harman Senior Vice President and General Manager for Connected Services Sandeep Kalra said. “Together with Samsung, we are bringing about next-generation IoT and cloud-based solutions for our customers.”
