Huawei Philippines, the local subsidiary of information communications technology (ICT) giant Huawei, will embark on video-content development as part of expanding its footprint in the local market.
Richard Chang, head of Huawei Philippines Consumer Cloud Service, said it will introduce VidPlus to Filipinos to enable them to experience entertainment on the mobile platform.
VidPlus is a subscription-based service that allows users to view content on the road. “We provided samples for the viewers for free. After that, they can opt to pay,” he said in a recent interview.
VidPlus was created by Huawei Technologies Inc. to enable subscribers to watch and enjoy the most popular Hollywood movies, funny videos, music videos, as well as highly rated documentaries and the best of Chinese entertainment. Developed to attract all social classes in the Philippine market, VidPlus also offers world-class children’s content for the family for their bonding moments.
Chang said VidPlus is one of the pioneer projects for video showing in the country. With the introduction of the new service, he added Huawei will build an ecosystem for the new service. To reach out to more users, Chang said the company recently formed a partnership with Globe Telecom to distribute the content. He added Huawei will also form future partnerships with other brands.
“The translation of the content will be handled by the local companies. Our goal is to bring good content to users,” Chang said.
Aside from the Philippines, Huawei has also set its sights on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations market. With a population of around 600 million, the Chinese technology giant wants to get sizeable share of the market.
Edison Le, regional head of Huawei video team, said the company is also active in delivering and aggregating content around the world. At the same time, he pointed out that Huawei is localizing the content from video, music, games and applications.
“In the future, we will provide app stores for such products,” he said.
“These stores will also serve as a gateway for Huawei devices to access thousands of applications,” he added, saying the company is encouraging content developers from the Philippines and other Asean countries to promote theirs outside the region.
“We plan to bring lateral content to the Chinese market. Asean is one of the closest regions to China. Aside from that, the Chinese are almost present in every region of the world,” Le said,
At the same time, he added Huawei is also helping the Chinese developers to expand their presence in the overseas market.
As an international company, Le said Huawei is serious in helpings its Chinese partners to bring their content to the Philippines and other markets. “We also want to help Filipino providers bring content overseas where there is a big presence of Filipinos.”
In Europe and the United States, Huawei is offering Huawei Movie. Nevertheless, Le said the company will consolidate VidPlus and Huawei Movie later.
Aside from the Asean, Huawei is also present in 27 countries in the South Pacific region.
“This is a trend that has been going on. But localization is not only translation. You’ve got to love and adapt to the local culture,” continued Le.
Le said the regional office of Huawei will push the development of video content in the Philippines this year, adding the company has sent in a team to inform the market of what Huawei can offer to local users.
