EDUCATORS from Muntinlupa National High School (MNHS) will represent the Philippines in this year’s Zayed Future Energy Prize (ZFEP), an international competition for renewable energy (RE) and sustainability innovations in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Their entry, titled “Comprehensive Algae Microfarming Project Using Solar Powered Photobioreactors,” bested 2,296 other research proposals from 112 countries in the Global High School Category–Asia.
Project proponents MNHS research advisers Ma. Regaele A. Olarte and Jason B. Albaro, and MNHS Principal Dr. Florante C. Marmeto, will be presenting their study at the 10th Annual Awards Ceremony for the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week in January 2018.
They will pit against other finalists in the said category, such as Bahrain Bayan School (Bahrain), Mahindra United World College of India (India) and Shenzhen Yadi School (China).
Mayor Jaime R. Fresnedi congratulated the local educators for the achievement and for bringing the country to the global stage.
He expressed hope that they will serve as an inspiration for other Muntinlupeños to also explore research work on RE and sustainability.
Their breakthrough study is timely and relevant, as the country relies more on imported fuel, thus making the cost of electricity here one of the highest in Asia.
But, with the government’s Philippine Development Plan for 2017 until 2022 now being finalized, RE is now gaining ground.
Clean and RE sources like geothermal, hydro, wind, biomass and solar energy are among the country’s few competitive advantages, since it has no significant deposits of fossil fuels.
Renewables now account for just 30 percent of the country’s energy mix. The government-led National Renewable Energy Plan aims to triple RE capacity to 15,304 MW by 2030
Established in 2008, the ZFEP recognizes innovative solutions to create a new and sustainable source of power for today and future consumption.
This annual search, likewise, honors the environmental legacy of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE.
ZFEP hopes to inspire others to positively impact the world through their vision and commitment to address the challenges of climate change, energy security and the environment.
