THE local government of Quezon City is allocating its property in Barangay Tandang Sora to be developed as a socialized-housing site for the benefit of informal settlers residing in the area for 40 years and have organized themselves into a homeowners’ association.
Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista recently signed Ordinance 2539-2017, authored by Councilor Marivic Co-Pilar, designating a 1,000-square-meter land for the purpose of socialized housing for the benefit of the informal settlers who are members of MCP II Bagong Pag-asa Homeowners Association Inc.
The local government acquired the lot through public auction in 2014 and has never been redeemed by its private owner within the one-year redemption period, as provided for in Section 261 of Republic Act (RA) 7160, otherwise known as the Local Government Code of 1991.
Bautista said, “The socialized-housing project in Tandang Sora is a manifestation of Quezon City’s efforts to solve the urban-poor dwelling problem in the city,” adding, it is also in accordance with RA 7279, otherwise known as the Urban Development and Housing Act of 1992.
“To facilitate the development and improvement of the aforesaid property, there is a compelling need to declare it as socialized-housing site in order for the residents to avail [themselves] of various benefits and exemptions accorded to socialized-housing beneficiaries under, but not limited to, Republic Act 7279 and Batas Pambansa 220,” portion of the ordinance read.
