JERRY YEE has resigned as head coach of the University of the Philippines (UP) women’s volleyball team, ending a four-year stint that saw the Lady Maroons transform from cellar-dwellers to darkhorse spikers.
Yee’s resignation leaked during last month’s Premier Volleyball League Open Conference where UP showed remarkable improvement.
But at the start of Collegiate Conference, the Lady Maroons opened their campaign without Yee and they lost to Adamson University, 25-17, 21-25, 25-19, 19-25, 9-15. UP management did not give a reason for Yee’s absence.
The team’s conditioning coach, Rald Ricafort, Assistant Coach Kate de Lara and players Diana Carlos and Isa Molde confirmed Yee’s resignation.
“He told us that he is already tired and for us players, we just wanted to accept his decision of leaving us,” Molde said. “It’s sad for us because we’ve been through a lot together for a long time. He became a father to us.”
Yee’s best UAAP season with the team was two years ago when he ended a 13-year Final Four drought for the Lady Maroons.
