Before the dawn of the front-facing camera, we took our selfies (if we did at all) “blindly” using our mobile phones. I use the word blindly because many of the selfies were headless or partially so.
Selfies or selcas (self-cam pictures) are a recent phenomenon. Every self-respecting netizen needs a good selfie; one the person could use as a display photo or profile picture. Over 50 percent of every person’s phone camera roll is usually dedicated to selfies. Not all of these images are posted online but they’re there.
Actually, I think the best profile picture is the one taken by a professional photographer in a studio, complete with lights and background, but what do I know? All my selfies are horrible. They make me look worse than I do in real life. I’m no beauty, okay, but that big-nosed droopy-eyed person in my selfies is a stranger.
Teenagers, on the other hand, are experts. My daughter and her friends take the best selcas and that’s even before they use filters. Even friends my age take the best selfies. So it’s me, not my age.
The phone’s front camera is not just for selcas. It can also be used to take your picture that will serve as a passcode to open your mobile.
But back to selfies now. A good selfie can get you a date on Tinder, Grindr or GROWLr. In these dating networks, you are judged by how you look. I’m not saying you have to be attractive. Beauty is subjective. What’s beautiful to one might be monstrous to another. So basically, a selfie just needs to pass a certain person’s standard to get noticed.
If you don’t think your selfies are perfect, they are so many ways to improve them and, no, losing weight is not involved in this process.
You can use apps which you can download from the App Store or Google Play to make your teeth whiter or cheeks thinner, or even change the colors of your lips.
Selfie Editor, for instance, can make your skin look airbrushed and enlarge or diminish certain features. FaceTune lets you edit your selfies and does other things, such as make you look like you’re wearing lipstick when you’re not. Some phones have a beauty filter. Others give your image the Bokeh effect, defined as “the pleasing out-of-focus blur in a photograph”.
