THE Quezon City Council has approved the application of three bus companies to build terminals along Quirino Highway in Novaliches, Quezon City.
The council, apparently, is unaware that building terminals along the busy road will exacerbate traffic in the area.
Quezon City councilors gave Safeway Bus Line Inc., Fran-Vill Transit Inc., and Diamond V Eight Transport Inc. the much-sought-for special-use permits (SUPs), in effect, dismissing complaints that such terminals would add more vehicular traffic to the bottleneck in Novaliches.
The SUPs were covered by three separate resolutions filed by Councilor Oliviere T. Belmonte.
Safeway Bus Line Inc. applied for two special permits for the construction and operation of a garage and a one-story office with motor pool and another bus garage in Barangay Kaligayahan.
Diamond V Eight Transport Inc. and Fran Vill Transit Inc. got their SUPs for the construction and operation of their garages in Barangay Santa Monica.
Critics maintained Quirino Highway is a busy road and adding more bus terminals along the road would not be good for public health, safety and welfare.
The issuance of SUPs by the city council is in compliance with the provision of Article VII Section 2 of Ordinance 918-2000, otherwise known as the Quezon City Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance.
