Caritas Manila is the Archdiocese of Manila’s lead social-services and development ministry. Its core programs are geared toward integral human development, and spiritual and socioeconomic development of the poor. The projects of Caritas Manila today reflect this deep commitment to the meaning of its name—Caritas,
meaning love.
As Caritas Manila believes that education is the most effective developmental program for poverty reduction, its flagship program, Youth Servant Leadership and Education Program (YSLEP), expands its help to poor youth in other areas of Luzon, as well as in the Visayas and Mindanao. For over 60 years, YSLEP was able to assist more than 10,000 out-of-school youth and children of poor families to become professionals, productive citizens and servant leaders. Currently, there are more than 5,000 youth nationwide under Caritas YSLEP.
Other core programs of Caritas Manila are Restorative Justice Ministry intended to the development of the prisoners and the correctional community based on the principles of Restorative Justice and Caritas Damayan, the Preventive Health and Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Program, which endeavors to make Caritas Manila partner-communities and families more resilient against threats to their health and safety.
Also, to help sustain the programs, Caritas Manila continues to strengthen its stewardship program. People can support Caritas by donating in cash and in kind through Segunda Mana. Currently, it has 24 charity outlets and two long-term bazaars.
Caritas et Labora, Caritas Salve Credit Cooperative and Caritas Margins were officially spun off from Caritas Manila and are now existing as distinct social enterprise institutions, still with the goal of being able to reach out and help the poor help themselves.
