FAR Eastern University (FEU) and University of Santo Tomas (UST) fight for survival at the start of the step-ladder semifinals of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 79 men’s volleyball tournament today at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.
The Tamaraws ended the eliminations with a quick 25-23, 25-18, 25-18 victory over the Growling Tigers in a warm-up to the semifinals on April 8. But with the stakes now much higher, FEU is bracing for a tough UST fightback in the no-tomorrow match at 2 p.m.
Ateneo, starring Most Valuable Player Marck Espejo, swept the 14-match eliminations for the ninth straight season to jump straight to the best-of-three Finals. The Blue Eagles have won 28 straight matches since last season.
National University wound up second behind Ateneo with a 12-2 card.
The Bulldogs have a twice-to-beat advantage and will face the winner of the Tamaraws-Growling Tigers clash on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Finishing with an 8-6 won-lost card, FEU made a huge turnaround after missing the Final Four last year due to a second-round collapse.
